We're having a heat wave

Boy is it hot! I don't recall a summer this warm in the 37 years we've lived in this part of the country. And I don't recall a summer this humid. Hazy, Hot, and Humid are not three things we often suffer through around here.

I suppose the summer we went out west and enjoyed a humidity-less 110 degrees in Arizona and Wyoming was similar here in N. KY, but we weren't here, so I don't know.

I got into the car yesterday. It was 97 degrees outside. The inside temp of the car was awful, and so I didn't touch anything until the A/C had cooled off the steering wheel and the window buttons. Then I opened up the windows and waited for the A/C to get to it's 70 degrees of coolness.

I'm so grateful that the home A/C is working and that we got it fixed several weeks ago. I just can't believe that we have had so many over 90-degree days, and so many over 100 degree days this year.

Yesterday, when I got back in the car after going to the deli and bakery, the outside temperature was already at 101, and that was at noon. I don't know how hot it actually got yesterday because I just stayed indoors.

Now, about Cyndi. I talked to her this a.m. and she has put off some of the tests they wanted to put her through for a while. She said she was "tested out" and would go back at it after she got the children settled at Calvary Christian, got all her school supplies purchased, clothes gathered, etc. She's looking forward to having only two children at home this year. No home schooling this year.

I was going to go down to the pool at 9 a.m., but the temp was already in the 80s and breathing was not fun. I do have a problem breathing when the humidity is so high.

Both Alan and I are getting our hair clipped this afternoon, then we're heading out to Walmart so Alan can get the ammo he needs for his gun-permit-carrying class on Saturday. I'm not sure I want this to happen, but he's determined. I don't think he'll do well on the target practice since his eyes are so poor. He may not pass to get the carry permit. I haven't mentioned this to him.

His eyes are getting progressively worse. He's now reading three words at a time on his Kindle. The biggest print they have is what he uses. And he can't read anything on the TV, let alone see it. I think we need to get back to the eye doctor before his three months' time is up. I did mention that to Alan, but he wasn't real receptive to my nudge.

Well, I'll quit bragging, complaining, talking, etc., for today. I'm off to get my hair cut and then sit in the heat and wait for Alan to get his ammo at Walmart's. Yuck!

David

Well, my time with David is over for at least a week. What a good child. It hasn't always been that way. During his terrible threes, I decided to just leave him with his mom and dad until he grew up a little. Now he is eight, almost nine, and we had such a good time together.

I didn't take any pictures because most of our time was spent at the pool, and pools and cameras don't really go together too well. His other occupations were a computer game -- he got to level 78 -- and reading. He is so very smart, like his daddy, and he was devouring the books he got at the library on Tuesday.

Alan and I taught David to swim and float and doggie paddle and breast stroke and cannon-ball. So, David did his swimming thing, and as he was doing that, all I could see was my son, Phil, and remember him as a child about David's age. In fact, I almost called David "Pip" a few times.

David never said "no" to me, and he was helpful the whole time he was here. He made brownies and took care of his own clothing, very neatly (amazingly so). He wanted to eat at the table all the time (well trained, I supposed), but I allowed him to eat in the library while he was watching TV, which was mostly just for breakfast.

The poor kid -- last night I put him to bed around 8:30. He was going to read until around 10:00, and I was going to let him stay up until 11:00, if he wanted to finish the book he was reading. But he turned his light off around 9:00 p.m. and was putting out z's by 9:05. He didn't get up until around 9:00 this morning. He was really, really tired. I guess spending six hours in a pool, and swimming or cannon-balling the whole time, is strenuous.

I was also in the pool, but I was mostly treading water, which is easy for me because with my weight I'm pretty buoyant. I hurt my knee again in the pool so I could hardly walk again last night. And this, after three weeks of feeling so very, very good with limited pain in my joints and nerve endings. But today the knee is feeling a little better, so if I stay off it, I should be able to clear up the problem in a few days.

Next week I plan to have David back to "practice" his swimming and I'll invite Rosie to join him.

The word of the week is "awesome". The word used by my grandson for every event we had planned, and those we didn't have planned. Even my pork chops (which he ate very little of) were "awesome".

OK. 'Nuf said.

Alan's Kindle -- another tail

Alan has a Kindle, and the books on his Kindle are very different from the ones on my Kindle. His books are, or should I say "were" history books or religious books.

Yesterday, my dear husband decided he was going to explore the workings of his Kindle rather than just read. I have been downloading books (free ones) that I think he would enjoy, and now that he can put books into folders (a new feature of the Kindle), he wanted to categorize his books. I showed him how to do it.

All was working fine and then he decided to explore a little further. Well, in his exploration of what was new, he deleted everything from his Kindle. He somehow got rid of all the books we had purchased for his Kindle.

That said, he has been after me every hour (except through the night until 7 a.m.) to fix his Kindle for him. I knew what to do, and I did it. I found out that in deleting his books, he also deleted his Kindle from Amazon's Kindle page for us. So I had to put his Kindle back on. I hope I don't get charged for a new Kindle again. I don't think I purchased anything new, but I never know.

Anyway, I was able to get all his books back onto his device, and he can now read his books again. He uses the biggest print which puts about six words on the screen at a time. How he can read that way, I don't know. But until he finally gets his eyes fixed, which will be in about six months, he has to read that way.

His last trip to the eye specialist/surgeon showed that his eyes are degenerating. So the doctor wants to measure how quickly this is happening and will check him again in a month, then in three months, then in another three months. After that he will get him some glasses. Until then, Alan will have to carry his magnifying glass with him, and walk in a fog. The poor guy!

Nothing new

Nothing new here at the Hahn House. I went to the doctor yesterday for a check-in regarding the new fibro meds. I have to say I haven't felt so pain free for years. I can even get out of the pool without suffering (in the knees). I did tell the doctor that I was tending to sleep 24/7 and she said the meds were supposed to work just the opposite. I told her I am probably the only person in the world who wakes up using Benedryl. What does that tell you? She laughed.

Actually the sleeping is really not as prominent as it had been. I'm down to about 12/24 now, which I can handle.

I exhausted myself today but that was mostly because of the weather. I went down to swim this morning and spent about 2 hours in the pool (not swimming that whole time, but in the water). So, while I wasn't swimming the whole time, I was at least standing or walking or bending my knees or treading water.

Then I went home and told Alan I was going to the farmer's market. It was so hot there. I thought I was going to collapse, actually. I did get some wonderful tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon, peppers, green beans. Enough veggies to carry me through the early part of the week. I'll head back there again on Friday.

Alan is still walking great, as am I. No canes. No walkers.

I have to say that I was prepared for a lot of pain when I went up the last step out of the pool because it is higher than all the others. But there was none. Nada. Zero. I was amazed, and so thankful. I guess the new meds are working on my arthritis as well as the fibromyalgia. Or maybe it's all those FRESH fruits and veggies I'm eating now.

Inquiring minds want to know

This is my new kitchen. Well, not really a whole make-over, just new floor, backspash, and drawer pulls. The appliances are on their last legs and we just spent $200 to get the refrigerator fixed. That's the last fix on the fridge. Next fix is a new refrigerator. The stove isn't heating real well, and the dishwasher is chugging along, soon to need replacing, I'm afraid. But for now, it was just the floor, etc.

This is my new backsplash. Alan loves it because it's lots of grays. It's glass tiles, and the blues are a little lighter than what shows up here.

My new drawer pulls look like this. Aren't they pretty? The cabinet pulls are just simple brushed nickel knobs.

The floor is faux slate. I love it. So cool beneath my feet. Of course in the winter I'm going to have to wear socks, but during this very warm summer, it's a real blessing.
So that's it.

New Kitchen

Well, mostly new. I didn't really need a new floor in the kitchen, but I wanted the kitchen and dining area to having the same flooring, so the kitchen floor was replaced and so was the dining area.

I say "dining area" because what is supposed to be a dining room in this particular condo is our library. We decided before we moved in that the kitchen dining area would be plenty big for our family, including the times when we have more than just Alan and me. The dining area of the kitchen was carpeted. That is okay if it's just adults, but when you have kids over, forget it. So, after 9 years or spills and clean-ups and stains that wouldn't come out, I finally got a slate floor.

Why slate? Well, what I wanted couldn't be put down on the concrete board that was under the carpeting. So, slate it was. Well, sort of. It's actually a vinyl that really looks like slate, and I love it. It's bumpy, textured like slate, but it's easier under foot than slate.

And while I was at it, I had a back splash but in. Multi-colored glass tiles in tones of grey/black/blue. We never had a back splash, just painted walls. Do you know how grungy those walls get, especially in a kitchen after nine years of at least weekly washings?

When they were putting in the floor they discovered that my refrigerator was leaking and it really damaged one of my cabinets. The one side of the cabinet acted like a wick and sipped up the water. I don't know how long this has been leaking. We'll be (1) getting it fixed next week, or if it can't be fixed, (2) getting a new refrigerator. Alan's also talking about getting a new dishwasher since the one we have is on its last legs.

So, I'm in the process of putting the kitchen/dining room back together today and for a few days to come. I can't believe how much stuff accumulates over the years, stuff that I haven't used for years, stuff that I'll be pitching as I set up my new kitchen.

So that's ttfn. Back at ya in a few days. Pictures to follow after I get it back together again.

Where did June go?

It's July! Actually, it's already July 5th. Where did June go? I think I slept through the entire month. Seriously.

New meds. All I do is sleep. I'm pushing here to write coherently. My eyes are heavy, and I'm trying really hard to keep them open. Focusing is difficult.

New meds. No more pain. Six days, I have slept. No peas in the mattress. What a relief. But...I am sleeping all the time.

I feel asleep with the light on, my glasses on, and the Kindle on my chest. Alan came in a removed the Kindle, took off my glasses, and turned off the light. This was at about 4 a.m. I didn't feel a thing, nor did I realize he was in the room. I'm sleeping very deeply, it seems.

My sister called yesterday, and I didn't hear the phone, which was right by my ear. Deep sleep. That is so unlike me. I'm not a heavy sleeper. Usually, I barely skim the surface between sleep and non-sleep. But this new medicine.

All I have to do is sit in a chair to read or watch TV, and I'm out like a light. Or if I move to the bed to get comfortable, as soon as I hit the pillow, I'm asleep.

I'm wondering how long it will take for me to become accustomed to the new meds. The doctor wants me to try them for 30 days and then we'll discuss whether I should continue taking them.

I am very pleased about the NO PAIN effect, but not pleased about sleeping my life away.

Regarding the Fourth of July. Alan and I spent a quiet day at home. I went out on the deck around 9:30 p.m. and watched six different fireworks displays. That was fun. The trees are taller this year, so a couple were barely visible. I used to be able to see more than I could see this year, but since the trees have grown, I don't see as many as before. Well, I guess six is enough, don't you agree?
